A kakuro page on a scrivener’s desk by candlelight: a grid of pale paper cells part-filled with digits, grey clue cells carrying two figures each side of a diagonal, and the entries that already add up marked in green

HOW TO PLAY

Make every run add up.

  1. Every white cell takes a digit from 1 to 9.
  2. A run of white cells adds up to the figure at its head — above the diagonal for the run going right, below it for the run going down.
  3. No digit appears twice in one run. That is what makes a sum a short list: a 3-in-two can only be 1 and 2, a 16-in-two only 7 and 9.

Three hundred and twenty pages in five sizes, from a three-minute Tally to a half-hour Reckoning, plus one shared page a day. Every page has exactly one answer and can be finished by reasoning alone — no page here ever needs a guess. Tap a clue and it prints every combination it can be, straight out of the back of the book; a digit already spent in a run is struck through on the keypad; and a run that is full and is not right says so in its own figure. Nothing else is told to you: the page does not hold the answer to itself. Each page keeps a public best time, and the one you are in the middle of is still there when you come back.
